The day had been too long and the late evening drive unwanted. The pink sunset was more of a distraction than an inspiration.
And then I saw it.
Headlights coming towards me but too high off the ground to be a car.
A large semi?
No, even too high for that.
And then I noticed the odd glow even higher up.
“Honey, what are you doing?”
I pointed at the glow.
“The reflection of your mobile?”
“The lights…”
“The construction lights on the bridge? Now get back in our lane.”
I knew I shouldn’t have watched Close Encounters last night.

🙂 that’ll do it. Next time for straight to bed … no more close encounters. 😁

Exactly. Or perhaps he needs to let her drive to avoid those close encounters.

Maybe it is a survival instinct that our minds automatically jump to the worst case scenario, even if that scenario is totally whacked… Thanks.

Dazzled by the light and suggestive TV drama.

Yep, sometimes those dazzling lights do that. Or, for me, classic Steven Spielberg movies…

I don’t like night driving, the road always looks different and those oncoming lights are so distracting. You’ve nailed the expectation that he’s going to get gobbled up by a ufo…love the last line. Well done!

I don’t really like driving at night, but do too often. So far no Close Encounters with UFOs, but sometimes I wonder… Thanks.

LOL! Yep, good one! Most times (well, depends where … but …) hooves are horses, not zebras.

I still like to think that the small wings are fairies, not bugs and that the hooves are unicorns, not horses, but I guess sometimes reality must be faced ;) Thanks!

But OF COURSE many of the little wings are fairies (in or out of disguise). :) As for the unicorns, I know a child who believes that horses are unicorn who left their horns at home “so people not be fussy over them” :)

lol, I am sure that’s what the unicorns do….

DearTrent,
This gave me a chuckle. I think I’ll go sculpt my mashed potatoes now. ;)

Or perhaps create a larger 3-D model in the living room. lol, I had half forgotten that scene with the mashed potato (it’s been a year or two…).

Roy can give you some pointers on sculpturing mash, Trent :-) I wrote about that for FF a while ago lol

Maybe mashed potato sculpting will become a big thing on FF…. lol, in this case I would follow Richard Dreyfuss’ example in trying to recreate Devil’s Tower. Poor Teri Garr, just didn’t understand.

Indeed!
That movie is a classic. It was on TV recently. It was such a blast back to the past…remembering the first time I saw it and the wow look I had when the mothership rocked up at the end. Such a good movie. The mashed potato could definitely be a thing on FF ..lol

I agree, that ending did have such a huge WOW factor back then. Still very cool today.

It is eh. When a movie can do that after so many years, it’s very cool. Considering the movie technology back turn and how it has advanced.

Well told, Trent.
I was distracted by the left lane driving, also.
I have seen lights coming toward me that I was certain were in my lane. That illusion was usually the result of road curves, unnoticed at night. Time to pull over and let her drive.

It easy to get a little confused at night. Yes, this is a driver definitely needs to let her drive instead!

And yet, I have seen things in the sky. One turned out to be the space station which was REALLY BIG and was literally directly overhead. And another one was an experimental plane in Arizona. But … there were a few other things that I’ve never been able to explain.

Back in the 70s I saw an SR-71 fly over – now that looked like a spaceship! A few unexplained as well, but no Close Encounters.

Yeah, I get it with Mary Poppins. Did you ever see the “Scary Mar Poppins” trailer on YouTube? If not, look it up. Yes, Mary Poppins was one of the scariest movies of all times…

I’m sure all sorts of things like reflections get reported, or at least told to friends – “Really! I saw one!” Always watch the road, no matter how many spaceship are flying about out there…. Thanks.

Now that’s a great bit of driving advice!
I love watch UFO shows. I’ve seen 90% of what’s recorded on those and can explain them as normal things. The other 10% are really interesting.

I do love the movie, and when Richard Dreyfuss first sees the UFOs and chases them all over (I forget Indiana? Ohio?) is perhaps my favorite part of the movie. Well, except for the Orchestra/Arp 2500 duet -as you said, “Du du du du duuuuu”

Too many sci-fi shows and movies have their own effect :)
Still, my story is a sci-fi one nonetheless this week!

I think we all start to believe after watching too many, and are a little disappointing that it wasn’t really a spaceship come to take us away…
