If We Were Having Coffee on the 4th of February, 2023 #weekendcoffeeshare

Hello and Welcome! Come on in. Quick – it’s cold out there! Here, I will warm you up with a large mug of a super strong dark roast, a cuppa tea, some hot cocoa or other beverage, as long as it is piping hot! It might be a little warmer now than when I got up this morning. With windchill it was down below -40 last night. Those in the know understand that -40 can be either F or C ;). Anyway, real temperature was at -15 F/ -26 C all night, but the wind was very, very strong. Oh, where are we that is so cold? If you didn’t guess by the cold temps (the entire east coast is cold!) and didn’t recognize the photo at the top, we are in New Hampshire.

Work was ultra-busy this week. At least the week is over!

The dogs were very demanding on walk time all week. Even Idina wanted to be out all of the time. So after work, yep, several walks. I think they like cool weather much better than warm when it comes to walking. They are both more full of energy and want to be out longer, walk farther and even go faster (when they aren’t going at a snail’s pace to sniff…)

I was able to exercise (dogs didn’t want to let me!) and upped a few of the weights a little. I did some, but not much, row machine since I couldn’t run.

I really haven’t had a chance to do anything with it yet, or learn about it yet, but I picked up a new car on Monday (I bought it Saturday). I think the operating manuals are thicker than that for the Starship Enterprise. I know it has more features ;)

It is a Kia EV6. Yeah, I had my old Ford C-Max plug-in for a decade, so it was time to move up. I will talk about it more in another post. I haven’t pushed it, but it is fast…

Beyond that, not a whole lot to report. Just the typical things like reading, playing music (keyboards), etc. Work just left me drained all week.

Anyway, I need to check to see if the house has warmed up at all yet. Thanks for stopping in! I will try to stop by everyone’s coffee-share later. Have a great week!

Natalie the Explorer is the host of the weekend coffee share and she is doing a wonderful job. Stop in at this week’s main share page or go to the InLinkz-Linkup to see all of the other shares!

Wow, that IS cold! It never got lower than zero here…a heat wave compared! Somehow I stopped getting notifications of your posts…and then started wondering if you were OK…so popped over here and signed up again for notifications! Glad you’re fine. Nice car!

WP does some odd things. I am pretty sure I have been seeing your posts, but I’ll have to check.
Yeah, it was cold and Mt. Washington in new Hampshire set a few records. But it is back to normal. I really hate when the frigid weather sticks around for a few days!
Hope you are having a good week :)

The cloaking device might actually be nice. Since I can’t find the button for it yet, I will just have to be careful with the warp drive – I do not need speeding tickets and it is easy to go much faster than expected with this…
As a FYI – I couldn’t get to your Coffee Share post using the link on the link up – I think there is an issue with it.

That looks like a sleek mean machine. Some of my friends drive a Kia, and I believe it will be a great new journey.

Even I need to sell my Ford- it’s been around over 11 years now.
Meanwhile, it sounds bizzrely cold at your end Trent.

The weather here has turned for the better. Loads of warm, sunny days; and spring is here, so it seems; after a very longish winter.
I’m sitting in the park downstairs and writing this and I like how my back is toasting up nicely against the wispy winter sun!

I’ve had a hectic week at work too, and the weekend was not much of a respite; as i continued to be on my toes. But I ain’t complaining as we enjoyed a cosy time with my parents-in-laws and I managed to do a whole lot of gardening and clearing out the dried leaves.

    Have a good week.

I’ll admit that when I was shopping for an EV in the range (driving distance, etc.), the looks of the Kia helped me decide on it. Yeah, my Ford at 10 was beginning to have some issues and I was starting to worry when I drove it any distance – I did have one breakdown two years ago and didn’t want another, so… Yep, new car time. I hope you aren’t having issues with your 11 year old Ford.
We often have a cold spell around this time of year, though rarely quite as cold as this one. We won’t be seeing spring until the end of March.
Despite work being hectic, it sounds like you had a good week. Hope you have a wonderful week this week :)

Bloody hell; I know you guys like to push extremes but -100 something is beyond bonkers. Like Robbie, I’m hibernating at minus anything. People talk about how poor the British weather is but we’re amateurs. Have you evolved to grow fur? Good luck with the wheels; how are the charging points distributed? Here range anxiety is the biggest limiting factor getting people to move over to EVs – that and the shortages; some models, most actually have months on waiting lists. Still we will get there. London’s mayor has just announced that any diesel car older than 2015 and petrol older than 2006 will have to pay a charge of £12.50 per day to enter any London borough from August. That’s 8 million people covered. That will remove a lot of polluting cars and the rules will just get tighter.

It was super cold, but luckily, just for a couple of days, so we aren’t growing fur yet. Well, I do know people whose family have been here a few generations, and I have my suspicions, but…
The distribution of chargers isn’t great but getting better. Since I had a plugin hybrid, I have a charger and will very rarely have to find one unless traveling a distance. I did a bit of research and there were places on most of the routes I can see myself going anytime in the next few years.
Wow, pretty drastic limit of cars! If it is anything like here, the people with the older cars are the people who can’t afford a charge like that. I’m sure the public transportation will get crowded… But it should cut down on the smog quite a bit.

Hey Trent, as you experiment with your new starship. do let me know if it has anything like compression braking available like older transmissions where you could have the engine slow you down by just taking your feet off of the gas or downshifting. They must have gears of some sort, but lacking cylinders, how could they have compression on the drive side of the transmission?
My old Toyota Highlander is getting up there so replacement is not too far off.

The breaks generate electricity, and you can set how much you want to slow down (how much electricity is being generated) when you take your foot off the accelerator. It can even go to a one-pedal mode, where taking your foot off of the accelerator will make the car come to a stop. Not for me, but having that bit of resistance so it slows is good, and having a paddle to change it is better – sometimes I do want to coast. The regenerative breaking is much better than on my old Ford.
You must be like my sister who buys a new car as soon as the old is paid off. Since I pay for both my car and my wife’s I like to wait until both are paid off and don’t mind driving an old car as long as it isn’t actively falling apart (I was getting worried about my old one!)

Congrats on the new car. I agree about the manuals, but with the newer vehicles so much – maybe everything – is computer operated. I had the engine light come in my truck, aka Alice, and it was just a chip thing but the dealership said they aren’t allowed to clear it and that I have to buy my own code reader! You can’t see me, but I’m crying because computer stuff is not my strong point.

Anyway, congrats on the car. It looks lovely.

This entire car is one big computer, and all of the functions… like, I can get an overhead view that will show me, in detail, everything around me, 360 degrees.
Saying you had to buy your own reader is just too much! If the dealer can’t clear, who can? Hope I don’t hit too many of those.
      Have a great week :)

    Congrats on the new car!

Those temperatures are insane. One of my friends posted an article on Facebook last night about the temps on Mt. Washington: wind chill of -101F. Gah! I don’t think even Mars gets that cold. It was 76F here yesterday, not that I’m gloating (well, OK, I’m totally gloating, but you’ll have lovely moderate temperatures in June, while it’ll be the approximate surface temperature of Venus here).

    Have a great week!

Yeah, New Hampshire was as cold as Mars over the weekend, so I guess you can gloat for now, but I will be smiling when you are up to Mercury temps, or even Venus, so… lol Today was in the 40s, so I can’t complain too much about a couple of frigid days.
You too, have a great week!

Love your new car! I think it’s sporty!! I’ve been seeing the weather reports and I can’t believe the records set. -109!! WOW! I know that’s on the mountain. Minus anything degrees I can’t imagine what it feels like. Lol – we are just way too warm here I guess. 🌞🤩 Have a better week this next week! (My work last 2 weeks has been very stressful, it should be much better this week!!)

-109 – yep, just up the road from me ;) Mt. Washington always has its own weather, and is usually extreme. Here, at its coldest, if I am in the sun and there is no wind, it feels fine (I dress for it). When I get out in the 25 mph + wind? Ouch!!! Even at a “warm” 10 degrees, that wind is killer – I did a few dog walks, and fine until returning home against the strong wind.
Hope you are having a good weekend and that you also have a less stressful week ahead :)

Hi Trent, nice looking car you’ve got there! It also sounds very cold over there, whereas here it’s still summer and we’re enjoying the warmth. I love my ebike and try to ride it instead of going out for short car trips. :). #wcs

I read that ebikes are were the electric vehicle revolution will make the most impact, and I understand – I have a few friends who use them. I do drive a long distance a few times a month, so the EV will help there.
It is always fun to talk to people in Australia (or SA, etc.) that are having hot summer weather when we are freezing, or the other way around, though I’m sure it doesn’t get this cold there! Have a great week!

Your new car is fabulous indeed! And WOW it is very cold in your region. Does the house stay warm? I sure hope so. Our weather is still like a yo-yo, warm, cold, warm, cold. I am ready for spring! Have a fabulous new week, and enjoy that car!

Unfortunately our house does not handle the cold well, at least not when it is super windy. I ran electric space heaters most of the day yesterday to keep the downstairs temperatures up. By evening, when the wind had died down and it was in double digit temperatures out, the house was able to take it.
I use green sources for electricity, so running the electric space heaters all day isn’t terrible. Also one reason why the new electric car works :)

My brother is in Vermont this weekend as well, and it is a bit colder where he is than here. Brrr…
I have been thinking electric for a while, and did do the plug-in hybrid for 10 years, so I was ready. Electric cars, even my old C-Max when in all electric mode, are fun.

Congrats on your new car! We had extreme cold weather yesterday but it’s warming up and from Sunday on it will be above normal temperatures for this time of year. Thank you for your weekend coffee share. Have a cozy and relaxing weekend!

Thanks! Yeah, the arctic cold made it’s way west to east and we are on the tail end. Brrrr. It is still frigid, which it has been since Friday morning, but it will warm up tomorrow.

Mt. Washington in New Hampshire was the coldest place on the planet last night at -48F/-44C and set the record for coldest windchill ever recorded at -109F/-73C, so, yeah, New Hampshire can be the fridge of the US (until a few years ago, Mt. Washington also held the record for the strongest winds ever recorded on earth).
Thanks! Hope you are having a great weekend :)

Ooo, 15 C is perfect! I can run without dying of heat exhaustion, get by with a thin jacket when I walk, etc. Not good for swimming, though kayaking isn’t bad… lol. A very different perspective on the world! Tomorrow it will be above freezing, so not bad. This time of year it averages about -7 C at night to +7 C during the day, though it drifts colder, sometimes much colder, more often than it drifts warmer than that.
      Have a great weekend!

We do adapt to our environments, at least to some extent. i spent over 2 years in a much warmer part of the country and never did get used to the heat. But I know a lot of people who hated where they lived at first, but eventually loved the extremes.

We do get sub-zero temperatures at least once a winter, and sometimes a week’s worth, but it rarely gets below -10! I have been out a few times, and it doesn’t feel bad until the wind hits…

The Volt Plugin was the big competitor for the C-Max plugin when I picked it up 10 years ago. I liked the C-Max and am sure I would have like the Volt as much. Chevy (GM) does seem to be doing the best job of any of the big three American auto companies as far as EVs go, despite Ford’s hype of the Mach-E.
So far I have only had one long drive with the EV6, driving home from Keene after picking it up, so it may be a week or two before I do a little “first impressions/review” post.
Hope you are having a great weekend and staying warm!
