The sound of 70,000 screaming fans was deafening, but I ignored it as I mentally prepared.
All eyes were still on the other end of the stadium. Soon enough they would be turned my way, as would the TV cameras.
The figure on the jumbotron, 50 times life sized, smiled at the crowds. He was the local favorite, so would be hard to beat.
With one last look at the blue sky and a deep breath, I walked to the middle of the field, adjusting my net and gig as my opponent readied his sword. It’d be a tough fight.

I do miss it, but I’m glad that they don’t kill all of the animals any more like they did back in the day… Thanks.

love the story although I have no idea about the equipment used :)

Thanks. Yeah, the equipment gladiators used was strange, but I guess most sporting equipment seems strange…

He’s mentally prepared. Hopefully it goes his way…

The gladiators of old were thoroughly professional and I would guess the gladiators of the future would be as well, so, yes, very mentally and physically prepared.

I like the way this unfolded. We aren’t really that far removed given the popularity of boxing and MMA.

Thanks. Yes, we do have a few pretty barbaric sports.Ensure nobody actually dies, and it’s on prime-time.

An epic battle is about to ensue!

Yes, and I wouldn’t want to be either of the combatants! (Actually, professional gladiators rarely died in the stadium, but still…)

So many had turned up to watch this unequal fight!
His opponent, the crowd favourite, was 50-times his size?
God save him.

Ah, I must not have made it clear – it is his opponent’s image on the jumbotron (giant screen they have in large stadiums) that is 50 times larger than life, not the opponent himself.

Some things never change. Men must have blood — of others. Hope he doesn’t spill any of his own on this day.

There does seem to be a bit of blood-lust in our species…

Oh, excellent…modern day gladiators. Could be a TV series!

The place just hasn’t been the same since the real gladiators went out of style…

Modern times gladiators. Bloodlust from the spectators. Some things never change.

Yeah, there is still too much of that blood-lust. However, though there are modern sports that are almost as bad, luckily, despite the violence of a lot of sports, most people are horrified when a player is seriously injured.

It’s hard to imagine a crowd appetite for bloody fights, but it’s all about expectations of course. I like how you led us slowly into this reality.
Typo – I think you mean deafening in the first line.

Thanks, I will have to go back and edit.
Our world has veered into safety above all, which is great, but I think even a short time ago they could have ratcheted it up so we expected blood on the sporting fields.

Can’t be far off bringing back a good old fight to the death as a form of family entertainment.

You may be right, though I have read that there were actually few deaths in professional gladiator fights – there was plenty of gore on display and a lot of “execution as entertainment”, but a gladiator was too well trained and expensive to just “throw away”.

Dear Trent,
This sounds like it’s going to be brutal if not bloody. The future of “modern” sports going back to gladiators? Chilling thought. Good story.
Shalom,
Rochelle

I used to think we were heading back to the gladiator days, but at least for now sports are going more and more towards safety, so maybe not…
Thanks.
