Video – Poly D Demo

For some odd reason, my review of the Behringer Poly D (see here) has been getting a lot of hits recently. I decided I needed a new piece of music that only uses the Poly D. here it is :

Yeah, sort of an 80’s Techno Pop vibe.

OK, a little more info…

The Poly D is a minimoog clone. Sort of. It has a few tricks up its sleeve, like letting you play more than one note at a time.

The bit of music features some of those things that differentiate the Poly D from the real Mini. For instance, it has three different “polyphonic” (actually paraphonic, but they can’t call it a Para-D 😉😎) sounds and uses both of the on-board choruses. i also did some percussion sounds, which I have rarely done with this synth, just as part of the demo. It is a bit muddy, but I think you can hear at least a few of the sounds…

I wrote this Friday evening, recorded it on Saturday and put up the video on Sunday, so it is a very quick take.

Here is what I wrote on the video (in part):

I doubled (tripled) the horn sound to get that thick, rich sound. No, that isn’t cheating. The extreme left and right are “straight up” while the middle uses the Poly D’s Chorus 2. I used the same horn sound with the Poly D Chorus 1 as accents in the verses. The two other “poly” (“para”?) sounds use the two choruses (a different one on each).

In case you can’t tell, I played everything in by hand and avoided copying and pasting finished parts, so you will hear mistakes and different mistakes throughout…

I threw in a lot of different sounds, and with some of the “by-hand-out-of-synch” places, it gets muddy, particularly on small speakers. It did sound great on my studio monitors ;)

I did try to get a variety of different types of sounds, but there are entire classes of sound that I use all of the time that I didn’t put in. Yeah, it has to be limited – it is already muddy enough! Also, I love, love the Poly D bass sounds, but I don’t think I did a great job here – listen to other things I recorded!

I hope you enjoyed this little ditty!

I did previously put up some music that took a little longer – Bach’s Little Fugue in G Minor. Here it is :

Thanks. I guess She Works Hard for the Money is pretty close to the time frame I was aiming at, give or take a year or two, though I did not have that song in mind. Truthfully, this does remind me of something, but I can’t think of what it is! As to calypso, it is most likely those off-beat accents that you are hearing, as well as the small high pitch sounds that run through the verse and pre-chorus – not steel drum, but a similar sound.
