Battle Front

PHOTO PROMPT © Alicia Jamtaas

A whiff of burned metal and the padlock was off.  They opened the door a crack and we all took a peek.

I glanced around, pretending to not to glance around.

The big guys, the ones whose names I knew, had on their best poker faces, but I could tell there was little interest.  They, in turn, were taking their cues more from the cameras than the contents.

The cameras had on their poker faces as well.  I could tell this wasn’t a setup.

But I knew bikes.

I opened the bid low and smiled.

Specialized would bring big bucks.

Have you ever seen Storage Wars? I have no clue if it is still on, but I saw it a couple of times many years ago. Funny. And you could tell that some units were setups. The usual suspects could usually sniff out the ones that had the big-money items hidden. Either that, or they just didn’t show the ones that were duds. Of course they didn’t show ones that others bought…

If We Were Having Coffee on the 17th of September, 2022 #weekendcoffeeshare

Hello and Welcome! Come on in and I’ll get you a large mug of super strong dark roast, a cuppa tea, a hot cocoa or some other beverage. It is pretty chilly out there, but it will warm up a little today and we’ll have pleasant afternoon. Perfect early autumn weather, though the official start of autumn is still a few days away. It does feel like mid-October instead of mid-September, but not complaining! Oh, where are we? Some of you may recognize the photo at the top as being from New Hampshire.

It is one of those weeks that I look back, scratch my head, and say, “What in the world did I do?” Hmmm. Well, I’ll make a stab at it…

I drove back from Cape Cod Saturday evening. I had been down there for over a week. It was good to be back. Sort of. In ways it is difficult to split time and energy between the two places, particularly as we get closer to a time when the place on Cape Cod will be the primary home and NH a get away. That time might not be far off…

If We Were Having Coffee on the 10th of September, 2022 #weekendcoffeeshare

Hello and Welcome! Come on in and I will get you a nice large mug of super strong dark roast, a cuppa tea or some other beverage. It is a gorgeous day out there! (I hope you get that that means I have to be short here ;) ). Oh, were are we? Some of you may recognize the photo at the top as coming from Cape Cod.

If you joined me last week, you know that I was one Cape Cod then as well. Did I go back to New Hampshire and return so soon? No, I have been down here for over a week. Not just that, I took some time off of work. I had Monday already, so I took the rest of the week. For years this was the week my parents came to visit, but I just saw them in Scotland, so… Anyway, I decided to take the week anyway.

If We Were Having Coffee on the 3rd of September, 2022 #weekendcoffeeshare

Hello and Welcome! Come on in and I’ll get you a large mug of very strong dark roast, a cuppa tea or some other beverage. It is bright and sunny, not a bit of a breeze, yet slightly chilly. After this summer, I’ll take the cool! I have been out a couple of times, first taking the dogs for a walk down to the landing and then a run down to and along the beach. It was a little shorter than usual (maybe 4 miles as opposed to between 4 1/2 and 5) since my running routine has been so off lately. Hopefully that will change! Oh, where are we? Besides the hints I just gave, some of you may recognize the photo at the top as being from Cape Cod.

Work was busy, but not insane.

If We Were Having Coffee on the 27th of August

Hello and Welcome! Come on in and I’ll get you a mug of very strong dark roast, a cuppa tea or come other beverage. It is cool out, but not as cool as would be expected – it still feels like a summer morning with autumn a distant dream. And where are we? Some of you may recognize the photo at the top as being from New Hampshire.

An odd week over all. I returned from a long weekend on Cape Cod on Sunday (if you saw my Smile post you know I spent that long weekend with my wife’s family). Work was just insane this week. It wasn’t super hot nor as humid as I’ve seen, but I had a hard time getting motivated to exercise. We also had some rain on three different days (yeah!!! the ground was browner than I have ever seen it), which made outdoor activity difficult. So just odd.

So, what did I do?

Well, some dog walks, though they weren’t into it as much as usual (heat? Humidity?). I did do some exercise, but only ran on Sunday (I will run today). I did a few chores around the house. Met with neighbors, including the little “Men of Wilton Monday Beer Meeting” on Monday. On Tuesday our Lions Club had a dinner at someone’s house. Usually these summer meetings are very short, but they stretched it for hours and I didn’t get to bed until after 11, which makes my 5 AM wake-up difficult…

If We Were Having Coffee on the 13th of August, 2022 #weekendcoffeeshare

Hello and Welcome! Come on in and I’ll get you a nice large mug of very strong dark roast, a cuppa tea or other beverage. It is relatively cool this morning but will get up to warmer, though not really very hot (for here in mid-August), temperatures later in the day. I guess it was very hot for a few weeks, so everyone is relieved by the cool temps. I was away, but I’ll get to that later. And if I am not away now, then where am I? Some of you may recognize the photo at the top as being from New Hampshire.

I got back into the country Monday evening. I had been gone about 10 days, leaving Friday July 31 pretty late. Actually really late – we had a late flight to begin with and it was delayed for 3 hours, so we might not have left the ground until August 1. And then the flight back was delayed 4 1/2 hours. So, yeah… And where was I? Here is a hint. I tell you later.

Going back to work after 10 days was, well, it was not fun, but the week is over (I had 7 1/2 days off).

Blogging Break

Hi All! I have mentioned in a few posts that I am takign a blogging break. Well, this post is the official notification :) If you don’t see posts by me for a couple of weeks, don’t worry that I am laid up someplace or celebrate that I have finally taken the hint and left. No, as Arnie said, I’ll be back.

I may read a few posts in the next day or two and will possibly even answer comments, but don’t expect it.

Anyway, hope you all have a couple of good weeks!

(No, I am not going to the Moon ;) Just put up a random photo…)

If We Were Having Coffee on the 23rd of July, 2022 #weekendcoffeeshare

Hello and Welcome! Come on over and I’ll get you a nice large mug of super strong dark roast, a cuppa tea or some other beverage. Something cold? i don’t blame you. I just got back from a dog walk, and it is starting to get warm, even if the backyard still feels cool. So green! Oh, where are we? Some of you may recognize the photo at the top as being from New Hampshire.

Of course the first thing to talk about is weather. Always the case, isn’t it? It was hot all week and will be hot all weekend. It was over 90f/32c every day this last week, hitting 98f/37C one day. It will reach 98 again tomorrow. The big thing is that a few days were super humid, so “real feel” was closer to 105f/41c a few days and will be again on Sunday. OK, some of you are laughing at me for calling 7 days above 90f a “heat wave”, but it is here in New Hampshire. We do not have A/C. We have had more days above 90 so far this year than there were the first three years I lived in New Hampshire combined. On the good side, the nights have been cooler than they could have been, so I have been able to manipulate windows so the inside isn’t too bad (one night it was still over 90 at 10PM, so that night the windows stayed shut…).

The Weekly Smile for the 18th of July, 2022 #weeklysmile

Hi all! I hope you had a great week with plenty to smile about. My last week had a few rough patches, but also some smiles.

I think for today’s smile I will do something different.

I woke up pretty early on Saturday morning. I was on Cape Cod alone with two of my cats, Alexander and Tiberius. It was after 6, so well past kitten-feeding time! I got up and fed them, but stretched and such as they ate instead of the normal routine of getting my own breakfast.

After I was sure cats were fine (they only eat while I am there watching, and if I spend too much time with one cat, the other stops eating) I went out for my run.

My run is about 4 1/2 miles (7.25 km). I hit the salt water swamp about two thirds of a mile (a km) in and the beach at about a mile (1.2 km). There is a road along the beach. On one side is parking where you can hop out of the car and be on the beach instantly. On the other side is the saltwater marsh. At the end, a little less than a mile and a half (just under 2.5 km), the road ends at the river in a small parking lot, where I turn around. However, the last 1/2 mile (just under a km) of the road is closed to vehicle traffic due to bird nesting.

Anyway, it was a great run.

If We Were Having Coffee on the 16th of July, 2022 #weekendcoffeeshare

Hello and Welcome! Come on in and I’ll grab you a large mug of a very strong dark roast. a cuppa tea or some other beverage, perhaps soemthign cool. It is not too warm yet, but not cool either. It will get pretty warm and humid so will feel hot later. I ran at 6:30 this morning to beat the heat. Oh, where are we? Some of you may recognize the photo as being from Cape Cod.

I drove down here on Wednesday evening. I worked all week, so the two days I was here was working. I did get a kayak paddle in Thursday after work and went to the beach on Friday. Today I will need to mow, perhaps hit the beach, maybe kayak again and will try to walk in the woods. A little vacation in one day!

For the most part it was a typical week. There was a lot of walking, with and without dogs, weight exercise, a little running, massage, reading, etc. Nothing too exciting. The weather has been nice.
