Weird Dreams….

We all have weird dreams, don’t we? For example, several years ago (6 or 7?), I had a really odd dream about being in a crypt with skeletons. The next morning I wrote a story about it. That story turned into my book The Halley Branch.

Of course, we often have really odd experiences in waking life. A year ago I had a very weird experience in a cemetery, which you can read about here. The important part here, though, is that stench that went away the moment I turned, the smell of death. I have only smelled this scent in very old cemeteries, and not all ancient cemeteries at that, just a few. It is different from the smell of, say, a dead animal. It is a horrible stench.

OK, why do I bring up that old dream and my spooky experience from almost exactly a year ago?

dream

I walk down the lavender path
Under rose petal skies
Scents of lilac and cinnamon
Permeate the clear ether
Each step in the heather
A
nd the heath
Peels away a century

Each step reawakens a memory
Present and past collide with…

“What in the world are you talking about?”

“You asked me about my dream, didn’t you?”

“Yeah, but this sounds like an acid trip turned to song. “Picture yourself in a boat” and all…”

“Well, perhaps an acid trip is a type of waking dream.”

“Right.”

“Anyway, the dream is simple.  Everything is vibrating, from the quarks and leptons to galaxy clusters.  We all have our own frequency with our own harmonic spectrum above it.  Sometimes we find ourselves in harmony with someone else.  Love. Or something else. Belonging. Or sometime else…”

“I was right, an acid trip.”

“A dream. And I found my harmony as I walked down the lavender path under the rose petal skies.  The scents of lilac and cinnamon permeated the clear ether.  Each step…”

“Oh, never mind.”

It Started With a Dream

The Hamlet Symphny - Alt Image

It started with a dream. And a very strange dream it was (*read the dream at the end of the post). It jumped around and didn’t make any sense and yet seemed real. I thought about it as I went through my morning routine. On my drive to work I wrote a little story in my mind based on the dream. By the time I pulled into the parking lot I had it pretty much down. I also realized it was more of a single scene than a standalone story.  i was thinking four, perhaps five, parts.  I took a break from work midway through the morning and cranked it out as fast as I could type. The scene was in my brain, I just had to type it out. I took less than 30 minutes to type and post the more than 1800 words of “The Halley Branch (Part 1)”.

For a few days it continued like this. I would think of the next chapter as I drove to work. Half way through the morning I’d take a half an hour break to write up what I had planned on my drive and post it. After the forth part I realized the story was going to be a lot bigger than originally planned, perhaps book length.

After about the fourth or fifth part I started doing a lot of the writing at home in the evening. Continue reading
