Door #writephoto

Door – Image by KL Caley

Another day, another dozen old buildings.  A lot of them were called “castles”, some “towers” and then there were the ancient manor houses, though anything newer than 15th century was right out.  This struck me as strange since most of the restoration jobs made these places about as authentic as Disneyland.

OK, I’ll admit, my sense of romance had worn a little thin after the first dozen.  As I entered, my first thought went to lack of indoor plumbing and how cold and damp they must have been.  Brrr.

And let’s face it, it wasn’t just the castles.  I had lost the romance over pretty much everything in life.

Life.  It had become a bore and a challenge.

No.  Romance was something for children.

Table #writephoto

Top of the table photo by KL Caley

I don’t want to tell you all of the behind the scene’s secrets for this reunion, but, well, I do like to show of my, is it presumptuous of me to say “genius”?

The landscapers were a little confused.  “You want the ground here perfect level but at a constant eight degree angle?  The words ‘level’ and ‘angle’ are self-exclusive.”

“No, no, I need it perfectly flat, and looking level from a distance, but that angle has to be eight degrees.”

And then the furniture maker asking why I wanted the legs on one side of the very long table extended while the other end was cut off.  If that table top wasn’t exactly eight degrees when finished, I’d have him start over – man, he was tough, but did it right.

The chairs were even more fun, but that is a whole other story.

Clouded #writephoto

This is a continuation of a story I wrote last year, Rift.

Everything had seemed so simple!  Jeg had received word from Ashna herself, queen of the godlike Atonee, that he was the key.  All he had to do was go back and mend the rift with Dalph and all would be good between their peoples.

Well, she didn’t say it quite like that.  And healing the wounds between himself and the beautiful Iniyan princess would not be easy by any stretch.  And that was the least of his worries.

Jeg’s mind clouded over. Continue reading

“Awake or asleep?”

Ed was sure that he was awake, that he had gone out exploring on his own, but the world was unearthly, much more like his dreams.

He thought about the journey that he had been on each night, through the pillars and then trees, down to the sea.  Where was he going?  And was he following a similar path while walking in the sunshine?

He shivered.

Not that there was much sunshine.

The feeble home-star was attempting to cut through the thick fog in vain, hanging like a ghost in the sky.  The world had been erased in grey, except for green path forward.

“It isn’t possible,” Ed mumbled to himself.  “I know I’m awake, or at least I think I am, yet this is so like my nightly journey.” Continue reading

Presence – Of Wind and Wings

stones-old-presence

Note – this story fit’s in with my on-line novel, Of Wind and Wings.  I’m not sure where it fits, but it will find a place ;)

*

Ed hesitated at the doorway.  He had been told that he had free reign of the house, yet he still felt a little uncomfortable, as if he were intruding on Liza’s privacy.  No matter how often she had protested that he was welcome to make himself totally at home, he had confined himself mostly to the kitchen and his bedroom.

Elisa was sitting in a comfortable chair with her back to the door.  She hadn’t stirred and Ed wasn’t sure if she were aware that he was standing there.  He fanned himself briefly with the photo in his hand as he watched her in his indecision. He stopped and frowned at the photo.  It was as if that old bit of paper were trying to make its presence known, to remind Ed why he was there.

That did it.

Ed straightened his back and walked into the room and stopped, looking down at his hostess.

Liza put her book to the side and smiled up at him.

“Yes?”

“I was wondering if you knew where this was taken.” He held up the photo.  “It was mixed in with my great-uncle’s papers and I just found it as I was reading through the notes.”

Liza jumped back as soon as she took the photo.  She blanched and her eyes grew wide.

“Ah, so you do know it,” Ed said, trying to make light of her reaction.

Liza took a moment to regain composure, and then handed the faded photograph back to Ed with a smile.

“I’m sorry,” she said, “but I can’t help you.”

Ed studied the photo for a moment.  A row of standing stones lined a path through a field full of wild flowers.  It would seem to be a noteworthy location.

He shrugged.

“Oh well, I guess I’ll just take it in and have Mr. Brown look at it.  I’m sure he’d recognize it…”

“What? Who?” Liza seemed to be even more distressed than before.

“You know, the historian…”

“Of course I know who Mr. Brown is, I’m just asking why you mentioned that man, is all.”

“He does know the local geography as well as the history.  Or perhaps The Grubb could help.”

“Yeah, ask the Grubb.”

Liza picked up her book and began to read.  Obviously the conversation was over.

Back in his room Ed continued to study the photo, trying to take in every detail.  There was something there, just at the edge of his perception.  He felt stupid for not being able to see it.

Perhaps not something, but someone.

Ed closed his eyes, still seeing the path and stones, but now in full color and stretching to the edges of his peripheral vision and beyond.

He could feel their presence before he saw them.

The couple had passed this way thousands of years before.

No, it was a different couple, hundreds of years before, ancestors that Ed had read about in his great-uncles papers.

No, that wasn’t right.  He could see them now.  It was his great-uncle and Liza’s mother.  They were walking hand and hand, smiling at each other.

No, no that wasn’t right either.

It was Liza and Mr. Brown, only they were young, perhaps in their teens or early twenties.

But no, it wasn’t them, it was Ed himself.

Who was he with?

The woman was shadowy, yet he could feel her presence, as he had in his dreams and visions.

He opened his eyes.

Was this his imagination running wild on his great-uncle’s words combined with Liza’s reactions, or was he seeing images of the past.  He shivered.  And the future.

He looked down at the photo again.

No.  It was just an old keepsake, something his great-uncle had taken in one of his many trips to England.  As far as Ed knew, it wasn’t even in the area but could be on the other side of the country.

He soon went to bed and fell into a deep sleep. He didn’t dream about the photo or the stones, as far as he could tell, and yet through the entire night he felt the presence of those other people he had imagined.

This was written for Sue Vincent’s #writephoto challenge.  The photo prompt is at the top of the post and this week’s key word is “Presence“.

The story this week is based on my on-line novel, Of Wind and Wings

The Elements – Towards the Light

What are the Elements? Brandon would start by saying Earth, Wind and Fire, then try to explain that he was really talking about the R&B band. After that bad joke, he might just bring out Earth, Water, Air and Fire.

Right, four elements: earth, water, air and fire.

But what if I told you that there were a perfect Seven Elements?  Yes, Seven, a perfect number! Well, there were, but no more, for one of the elements was lost, thus throwing Equilibrium out of balance. Ever wonder why things seemed so out of whack? Now you know.

Digging deeper, what if each Element was represented by a world and a race?  Earth would be humans, of course.  Quite opposite would be the air fairies. Most similar to humans would be the graceful, sensual elves, or dwarves (depending on culture) representing water. What would be opposite the elves but most similar to the air fairies? Perhaps the fire demons?  And where do the wizards fit? And what about those other elements? Continue reading

Books to This Point…

books-7-16-2019

My time for writing and blogging disappeared half way through the week, but I wanted to do a post.  Hey, why don’t I talk about my books?! So here is a list of books with their blurbs in order of publication:

Seasons of Imagination

Trent P. McDonald’s Seasons of Imagination contains an eclectic mix of stories covering many places, times and even different genre, yet they all hold one thing in common, they are all about people.

Be they silly, serious or speculative, all of the stories are about us.  What makes us tick?  Why do we say the things we do?  Why do we react as we do?

So whether it seems the stories are exploring outer or inner space, in reality they’re always exploring the human space.

Here is an invitation to open the page and come with me to explore the

Towards the Light and The Mad Quest – Released!

My book of two novellas, Towards the Light and The Mad Quest, are released today!

Towards the Light and The Mad Quest
Two Novellas

In what should have been a normal day, Brandon finds himself down the rabbit hole and into a new reality where he is captured by Dwarves, gets involved in “Elemental Politics” and finds himself in a race to save the worlds – yes worlds, six, perhaps seven – and the peoples of those worlds in the tongue-in-cheek Fantasy novella, “Towards the Light”.

Lorounce, a “not only is the glass half empty, but the longer we talk about it, the more that evaporates” kind of guy, is on a reconnaissance mission with his childhood friend and secret crush, Merla, to enter the stronghold of the evil Lord of Darkness.  The mission soon spins off on an adventure to try to rescue the prince, find and confront the dragon to secure the magic sword and then raise an army to defeat the evil one with said magic sword all while being chased not only by the minions of the evil one, including a pack of magical wolves, but their own people as well. Whew.  It is totally impossible, mad even, but with some unexpected help and a few twists along the way, maybe they could pull it off, this adventure called “The Mad Quest”.

“Towards the Light” and “The Mad Quest” are two fast paced, farcical Fantasy novellas.  With visible winks and nods to the great Fantasy works that came before, but with a few unexpected twists, these two stories are light-hearted valentines to those classic works of the past; love notes but with pokes in the ribs and “bunny-ears” behind the head fun.
