Briseis: That was Yesterday – Video (Reprise)

You may have noticed that with my new start/emphasis in music, I have been digging through old things I have written and recorded. Here is one I just listened to and want to bring up again. Yes, “again”:  I have posted this twice before!  I am going to combine those two posts into one here.

Real quick (I’ll go into depth later ;)), this is part of a song cycle about Acilleus that I planned on writing when I was doing “classical” music.  It never happened, but I later did a “light-prog-rock” version. The song, “Brisies: That was Yesterday”, takes place just after Agamemnon, in the ultimate political slap down, takes the woman Brisies away from Achilleus by force.  Achilleus knows he can’t fight the whole Greek army who he has sworn allegiance to, so he stands by and lets the Trojans kick some Greek butt.  In this song he realizes that he is in love with the woman who started out as a spoil of war.

Here it is:

The Last Passenger #Whatdoyousee

Image from Pinterest – no owner indicated but it ain’t mine ;)

It was time to get moving, yet there was only one passenger in my boat.

“Is this it?  Anyone else coming?”

The man’s blank stare told me nothing.  What did I expect?  They don’t know anything, never did, and once they find their way to the River’s edge, they know even less.

With a sigh I pushed off.  If more were coming, they’d have to wait.

Typically the boat was full. Packed to the gills, as it were.  This was just odd.

I reached the further shore and let the passenger off.

I was surprised to see The Boss down there at the dock.  He waved me over. Continue reading

Journey #writephoto

I don’t remember ever being so hungry.  Starved.  What an awful journey!  I cursed our captain and king, and went over the ridge.

Just think, we had been staying in a land where the fruit was unlimited.  There was nothing to do but sit back, eat, sleep and enjoy ourselves.  After all of those years of war, what more could a man ask for?  But no, we had to move on, continue our journey.

The idiot.

I stopped and pointed.  The weeds had been close cropped, so I assumed there was something edible around, but my suspicions were proved correct when I spotted the sheep.

Oh, delicious mutton!  Lamb steaks!  Lamb chops!

Actually, any meat would do, but this was glorious. Continue reading

Cold War

“I tell you, the world is different.  There was a major cosmic shift on or around September 29, 1959, as if the very atoms were scrambled.  We are not in the same place as we were, and we’re not where we are supposed to be.  It’s like we phased into a different Universe, one where we don’t belong.”

Our elite polar unit was taking a short break on our trek.  I was with Stan Petrosky, as always, and he was spouting his oddball philosophy, as always.

Stan had started at some fancy university as a philosophy major, but his parents had died in an accident, so he joined the army to make ends meet and to take advantage of the GI Bill.  I guess he never figured we’d be at war so soon.  But nobody had.

“You say the world changed on September 29 last year?” I asked.  “It doesn’t take a genius to know that, Stan.  It was only the biggest day in history since the 28th of June in 1914.  Hell, I’d say even bigger than December 7, 1941.”

“Yeah, what we did in September was like the killing of the Archduke, except that it was worse.  But it is more than that, beyond politics and war, it’s the Universe itself that is messed up; we are off track; we’re…”

“Petrosky and Dobbs, quit your yapping and get ready to move out.  The walls have ears.  We’re at war, you know.”  Sargent Smith was always all business, and was even worse on this mission. Continue reading

In the shadowy area where myth and history collide

Hello!  Welcome, welcome!  Come on in.  I have some fine wine open and other beverages available.  There are several types of gourmet cheeses and crackers.  I have fresh veggies and a variety of dips, if needed.  Some fruit.  Hmm, am I missing anything?
