Three Things Thursday – Computers and Such

This week I am once again joining Nerd in the Brain’s Three Things Thursday.  Yep, I’m going to talk about three things I’m grateful for this week and I won’t even mention the xxxxxx, well, you know.

Some of you may know that I lost my computer a couple of weeks ago.  I looked and looked and…  sorry, I should have said the computer crashed, the motherboard is fried and I can’t get the hard drive to spin up in another computer (yet).  So, yeah, no computer.  A couple of years ago I bought a very low-end laptop to keep down at the cottage on Cape Cod.  I went down and retrieved it right after the crash.  Of course, without that laptop I wouldn’t have been able to publish my… ooops, I said I wasn’t going to mention it.  So I’m thankful I had that.  Also, in the last couple of days I discovered more backup files.  Over all I lost a little less than one year of photos instead of three, as I had originally thought.  I am very grateful for that.  And yesterday the new baby, I mean computer, arrived!  So after 15 days I can start to set up the new computer!  I still have the laptop to work on until the new one is totally set up.  So I am grateful for the new computer!  Although that is three things, I’m going to count them as one, thankful about computer stuff. I haven’t made it a secret that a few things have gone wrong this last week (these are all in the last week).  I’ve talked about the computer and all of the photos, I may have mentioned some car issues.  There were appointments screw up (there fault, not mine) and services not provided (their fault again).  Not bad, but there was sitting at the repair shop for two hours after the time they said the car would be ready.  All of this and more.  On the worst side,  I don’t know if I brought up the plumbing issue.  The less said about it, the better….  Let’s just say that it was awful.  When any non-computer related issue comes up, if I can’t fix it or come up with a fix in a half an hour, I usually call my dad.  Sure, he’s over 600 miles (around 1000 km) away, but it does help.

I don’t know what it is, him growing up in the Depression and having to make do with almost nothing, being a top level engineer, just general experience or what, but he seems to be able to come up with a solution for any non-computer related issue I have.  Of course with the plumbing he just verified what I already knew and I still had to call a plumber, but it is nice verifying it.   (I did what I could, but normal people, not even  my dad, do not have the equipment necessary to fix the issue.) Thanksgiving

Looking at me

Thanksgiving here in the US means a lot of different things to different people.  I think that all of us need to sit back and take in one of the meanings: a time to reflect and be thankful.  Sure, there’s a lot out there that seems totally awful, from barrel bombs filled with chlorine killing little kids in Syria to police under large corporation control soaking people trying to protect their water on a freezing night.  Sometimes we are angry or sad, but every so often we do need to sit back and think about what we have.  So today I will participate in the “Full Grown Nerd’s” (Ms. Emily) “Three Things Thursday” thankfulness linkup.

Obviously there is family.  As I’ve said often in the last week, I had a good visit with my brother this weekend.  I just got off the phone with my parents and will most likely talk to them again later in the day.  I’ll also talk to my sisters this afternoon.  I have a pretty good relationship to my family, even if I don’t see them often.  I know a lot of people whose relationship to their siblings and/or parents is very dysfunctional.  That is something to be thankful for.
